The Gahcho Kué Diamond mine in Canada’s Northwestern Territories, produced more than 5 million carats by early October. The mine, 51 percent owned by De Beers, with Mountain Province Diamonds owning the rest, declared commercial production in March and has been projected to produce an average of 4.5-million carats a year.
Mine General Manager Allan Rodel attributed the great output to a higher-than-expected recovered diamond grade of 2.07 carats per tonne of ore through the first nine months of this year. The higher grade, along with swift and efficient work identifying and removing bottlenecks in the process plant, has allowed for a greater throughput.
Gahcho Kué’s production now accounts for a significant portion of De Beers’ global production portfolio and is credited with having boosted the group’s rough diamond output over the first three quarter of 2017.
