Now what exactly is the New Education Policy 2020?
The Union Cabinet approved a New Education Policy 2020 on 29th July, 202o. This policy has been made after 34 years long gap. The old policy was adopted in the year 1986 and was further revised in the year 1992. After 1992 there were no major changes made in the education policy.
The National Education Policy 2020 is an attempt to provide an overarching vision and comprehensive framework for both the schools and the colleges at large across the country. The National Education Policy focuses more on the overall upbringing of the students. The main aim of this new policy is the all-rounder development of the children. The National Education Policy aims that the students learn their subjects practically and not just rot-learning. The National Education Policy is all about making students known their capabilities and their interests, giving them open choices to choose subjects according to their areas of interest.
The National Education Policy 2020 is an interesting attempt towards making the Indian Education system at a par with that of the Foreign Education Systems.
Let’s Now Understand The Policy In Detail.
TheNational Education Policy 2020 aims at making “India a global knowledge superpower”.The new academic session will begin in September-October – the delay is due to the unprecedented coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak – and the government aims to introduce the policy before the new session.
The Modified Education Structure and the major changes:-
The extant 10+2 structure in school education will be modified with a new pedagogical and curricular restructuring of 5+3+3+4 covering ages 3-18. Currently, children in the age group of 3-6 are not covered in the 10+2 structure as Class 1 begins at age 6. In the new 5+3+3+4 structure, a strong base of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) from age 3 is also included. This will give the children between the age group of 0-6 years of proper training and understanding about themselves and will enhance appropriate upbringing of the same. Also EXCEED trained teachers will be recruited for the better upbringing of the children between the age group of 0-6 year. In order to reduce the importance and stress of board exam, a new modification in the board examination pattern has been made it says that the exam will be conducted in two parts: Objective and descriptive. The exam can be conducted twice a year. Board exam should promote knowledge application rather than rote learning.

The look of students report will change. Students will get a 360 degree holistic report card, which will not only inform about the marks obtained by them in subjects but also their skills and other important points.
Curriculum content will be reduced in each subject to its core essentials, and make space for critical thinking and more holistic, inquiry-based, discovery-based, discussion-based, and analysis-based learning. Giving students the scope to be knowledgeable and know their subject matter more clearly and accurately.
Interactive teaching is always considered to be the best way to learn and grow and The Education Policy aims to bring in the changes. The mandated content will focus on key concepts, ideas, applications, and problem-solving. Teaching and learning will be conducted in a more interactive manner giving both students and the teachers a scope to explore and grow.
Students will be given increased flexibility and choice of subjects to study, particularly in secondary school – including subjects in physical education, the arts and crafts, and vocational skills
There will be no hard separation among ‘curricular’, ‘extracurricular’, or ‘co-curricular’, among ‘arts’, ‘humanities’, and ‘sciences’, or between ‘vocational’ or ‘academic’ streams.
Subjects such as physical education, the arts and crafts, and vocational skills, in addition to science, humanities, and mathematics, will be incorporated throughout the school curriculum.
Each of the four stages of school education may consider moving towards a semester or any other system that allows the inclusion of shorter modules
Experimental learning will be given more priority in The New Education Policy. This will include hands-on learning, arts-integrated and sports-integrated education, story-telling-based pedagogy, among others, as standard pedagogy. Classroom transactions will shift, towards competency-based learning and education.
Every school will be used as a public library after school hours. Giving the readers a variety of options as to where and which book they can access. Schools will be made adult education centres after school hours. Quality technology-based options for adult learning such as apps, online courses/modules, satellite-based TV channels, online books, and ICT-equipped libraries and Adult Education Centres, etc. will be developed.
By 2040, all higher education institutions (HEIs) shall aim to become multidisciplinary institutions, each of which will aim to have 3,000 or more students. And by 2030 all the districts will at have one large multidisciplinary institution. Now, what does a multidisciplinary institute mean?
A multidisciplinary institution will mean a university that offers undergraduate and graduate programmes, with high quality teaching, research, and community engagement.
As said earlier The New Education Policy aims to be globally renowned and therefore it provides a global study destination providing premium education at affordable costs. An International Students Office at each institution hosting foreign students will be set up. In continuation of this high performing Indian universities will be encouraged to set up campuses in other countries. Selected universities like those from among the top 100 universities in the world will be facilitated to operate in India.
The New Education Policy gives more emphasis on the regional languages or vernacular languages. Wherever possible, the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond, will be the home language/mother-tongue/local language/regional language. The three-language learned by children will be the choices of States, regions, and of the students, so long as at least two of the three languages are native to India.
Children with disabilities will be enabled to fully participate in the regular schooling process from the foundational stage to higher education, with support of educators with cross disability training, resource centres, accommodations, assistive devices, appropriate technology-based tools and other support mechanisms tailored to suit their needs. Every state/district will be encouraged to establish “Bal Bhavans” as a special daytime boarding school, to participate in art-related, career-related, and play-related activities. Free school infrastructure can be used. Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardized across the country, and National and State curriculum materials developed, for use by students with hearing impairment. The New Education Policy is inclusive of everything giving the specialised children proper platforms to learn and do things they are capable of.
Efforts will be made to incentivize the merit of students belonging to SC, ST, OBC, and other SDGs. The National Scholarship Portal will be expanded to support, foster, and track the progress of students receiving scholarships. Private HEIs will be encouraged to offer larger numbers of free ships and scholarships to their students.
The best part of The New Education Policy is the inclusion of vocational courses. Every child to learn at least one vocation and exposed to several more.
A sampling of important vocational crafts, such as carpentry, electric work, metalwork, gardening, pottery making, etc., as decided by States and local communities during Grades 6-8.
By 2025, at least 50% of learners through the school and higher education system shall have exposure to vocational education
A 10-day bagless period sometime during Grades 6-8 to intern with local vocational experts such as carpenters, gardeners, potters, artists, etc. Also, there will be other bagless days for art and crafts, quizzes, storytelling, etc.
As we see that The New Education Policy is inclusive of everything, it’s going to be challenging to execute this absolutely new structures. This Policy would be the best policy to adopt if it’s implemented in the same way as discussed. This policy aims to encourage students to be educated and knowledgeable. Therefore it has also included regional languages. E-material will be provided in 8 different major languages, thus giving every student a better scope of learning. The policy has also aimed at keeping the culture and traditions alive by including various vocational courses and making it mandatory for every student to take up at least one course.
The policy also allows for multiple entry-exists. This is the most amazing aspect of the policy wherein students can have multiple entry-exists in the courses they plan to take. This allows the students to take up different courses and explore the best for them.
