Finding the right lenses to treat Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a condition where the eyeball of the person is not perfectly round.

The normal eyeball shape is round and this shape helps the light to reflect inside an eye. The reflection thus creates an image and we are able to see something.

But when the eyeballs aren’t perfectly round like in the case of astigmatism. The light is not able to reflect properly and thus the image formed is blurred or weird.

This condition can be fixed with use of right eyeglasses and contact lenses. One can find them all on acuvue oasys online.

Astigmatism can often occur along with farsightedness or hyperopia and nearsightedness or myopia. These three are said to be refractive vision defects.

How do eyeglasses and contact lens correct the astigmatism

The eyeglasses and contact lenses are of such shape that it minimises the curvature defect in eyes with curved surfaces. They allow light to reflect and hence form clear pictures.

Contact lens can either correct the issue temporarily or can be used for another treatment known as orthokeratology.

  • Orthokeratology: this process includes wearing a rigid and oxygen permeable contact lens overnight. These lenses reshape the eyeball, hence fixing the issue from the root.

Although one doesn’t need to wear these contact lenses always but need to wear them often. Wearing them often can help maintain the newly acquired shape of the lens.

You can find them on the website of acuvue oasys with astigmatism online.

How to determine that you have astigmatism

This defect has a lot of symptoms but the most important one of them is vision itself. As it is a refractive vision issue, it causes the eye to form weird blurred images.

The symptoms of this defect or of astigmatism are as follows:-

  • A person suffering from astigmatism might suffer from blurry or distorted vision
  • When you have astigmatism you experience severe eye strain.
  • Astigmatism also includes a lot of severe or mild headaches.
  • One can even face difficulty in  seeing at night.

If you face any of the above mentioned symptoms, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Astigmatism isn’t that serious issue but if not treated can cause a lot of difficulties in everyday life.

Diagnosis of astigmatism

If a person faces any vision issue or the above mentioned symptom they must go for an eye check up.

The diagnosis of the defect includes following procedure:-

  1.  Phoropter: In this process you need to look through a series of lenses in order to find the ones that can give you the clearest vision.
  2. Keratometer: In this procedure the machine measures the bend or curve at the center of your cornea.

It tries to find the steepest and flattest curves of your eye. These measurements help doctors determine the shape of your cornea and how well they can focus.

  • Autorefractor: In this procedure a device shines light into your eye and measures the reflected light. This test provides an idea  to your doctor for which lens you need.
  • Corneal topographer: In this procedure a  technology is used that gives the most detailed information about the shape of your cornea.

Your doctor will refer to this test if they are planning a surgery for astigmatism. It can also be done before prescribing contacts.
